NEW ORLEANS - Someone finally forced Hahnville to throw the football and someone kept Anthony “Pooka” Williams from breaking any highlight reel-type runs. That someone was Zachary and the Broncos are state champs for the second time in three years. Zachary spotted Hahnville an early 7-0 lead but built a 27-7 halftime advantage on its way to a 34-14 victory to capture the Class 5A state title Saturday night at the Superdome. &ldquo... NEW ORLEANS - Yes, defense still wins championships. In an age of high-powered scoring machines featuring spread offenses, the old adage of defense winning championships was never more on display than in West St. John’s 20-14 victory over Kentwood in the Class 1A title game Thursday afternoon in the Superdome. Offense was hard to come by as two championship-caliber defenses squared off. West St. John’s defense actually built the Rams’... Keep Reading

Except for a 26-second span late in the first half, West St. John dominated its Class 1A semifinal game Friday night against visiting Logansport, the defending state champions. Because of that 26-second span, what appeared a likely three-touchdown lead for the Rams at halftime suddenly became a precarious 21-12 edge for West St. John at the break. That gave an even greater urgency to the opening possession of the third quarter. West St. John had... Keep Reading

The legend of "Pooka" just grew exponentially. As if three straight 300+ rushing yard playoff performances hadn't already solidified Hahnville's Anthony "Pooka" Williams as the most dynamic player in the state, his heroics in the 5A State Semifinals which included 212 rushing yards, four more touchdowns (including a 99-yard kickoff return), and a walk-off game-winning two-point conversion led Hahnville into the 5A State Championship Game with a 43-42 overtime win at Acadiana. "All I was... Keep Reading

St. James was unable to contain Kaplan’s Wing-T offense as the Pirates rushed for 270 yards in eliminating the Wildcats from the playoffs 39-22 in the Class 3A quarterfinals Friday night in Vacherie. “It’s not something you see every day and it’s hard to simulate that type of offense in practice,” St. James coach Robert Valdez said of Kaplan’s Wing-T offense. “We don’t... Riverside Academy managed to score 17 points in the first half against a Notre Dame team that had allowed more than a single touchdown in only one game all year, but in the end, the Rebels’ defense was unable to get off the field against the Pioneers’ stiff defense and powerful rushing attack. It all added up to a 41-31 loss for the Rebels that eliminated the defending Division III champions from the playoffs... Keep Reading

When St. Charles took advantage of an early third quarter special teams mistake by U-High and turned it into points on a Lloyd Nash 1-yard touchdown plunge there was hope that the Comets could do it again. "It" was to pull off an upset against a bigger, faster, higher-ranked team like they had done last season at Notre Dame in the Division III Semifinals, or earlier this season against 5A Destrehan. But not on this... Keep Reading

Anthony “Pooka” Williams lost the regular season rushing title to Covington’s Devin Brumfield. He may just have to settle for being a 1,000-yard rusher – in the postseason. Williams rushed for more than 300 yards for the third playoff game in a row and the Hahnville running back is less than 100 away from 1,000 in the postseason. Oh, and by the way, Williams is going to the Class 5A semifinals along with all... Keep Reading

Even with his team down 22-0 early in the second half, Destrehan coach Stephen Robicheaux said he felt his team still had a chance in the Wildcats’ 22-14 second-round Class 5A playoff loss against visiting Barbe on Friday night. “We were moving the football but we were just shooting ourselves in the foot. I thought we could get it close and we did,” Robicheaux said. Three lost fumbles in the first half... Keep Reading
