St. Charles Catholic pushed it’s record above .500 while moving to 2-0 in District 10-3A play with a 21-6 road win Friday night at Donaldsonville. Defense was once again a key factor for the Comets, as allowed less than 200 yards of total offense and only nine Tiger first downs. They also forced two turnovers, including an interception and a forced fumble. The rushing game also played a major role in the victory. Of... Keep Reading

The return of Colton Jumonville – and four Lutcher turnovers – were too much for the Bulldogs to overcome in a 36-27 loss to Parkview Baptist in the District 6-4A opener Friday night in Baton Rouge. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Lutcher, which dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in district play. Parkview Baptist, a perennial power, won its first game of the season after getting off to a 0-5 start... Keep Reading

Early mistakes and missed scoring opportunities proved to be too much for Hahnville as the Tigers lost to Brother Martin 37-20 Friday night at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans. Trailing 20-0 at halftime, the Tigers fought back to within in 10 points at 23-13 with 10:48 left in the game before a flurry of quick points in the final two minutes helped to account for the 37-20 final. “Our kids fought hard and they didn... To many outside observers, the overriding theme for the 2018 Hahnville team is what will life be like for the Tigers after a 12-3 season, a trip to the Class 5A finals, and the departure of all-everything running back Anthony “Pooka” Williams. “I think what people fail to realize is how far this program has progressed over the last four years,” fifth-year coach Nick Saltaformaggio said. “When ‘Pooka’ graduated,... By now, everyone knows the West St. John Rams won the Class 1A state championship in 2017. Many observers continue the sing the praises of West St. John program, going so far as to say the 2018 Rams may be even better than the state champs of a year ago. That’s fine and dandy for Brandon Walters, but the Rams’ coach counters that it’s time to move on. “I’m... Keep Reading

Inexperience at several key positions on offense likely will cause the St. Charles Catholic Comets to rely on the defense in 2018. “If I find that our offense is really inept I will just play the game to our defense,” said St. Charles coach Frank Monica, whose team was 9-3 a year ago. “I am not going to try and put a round peg in a square hole is we are not capable... When folks around the River Parishes talk about the 2018 Destrehan Wildcats, the word “loaded” is often mentioned. With the likes of John Emery, Quinton Tarbor, J.R. Blood, Alex Huszar, Quincy Brown, and a host of others, it’s easy to see why. Emery has verbally committed to Georgia. Tarbor has committed to Mississippi State, Blood to Stephen F. Austin and Huzar to Southeastern Louisiana. Brown, entering his junior year, already has... Keep Reading

Dealing with the youngest team he has ever coached, Robert Valdez considers his squad analogous to the new St. James High campus. After literal years in the making, students are now attending school at the Vacherie location. “I’m real excited. It’s like this new school. It gives us a chance to grow. We have a tremendous opportunity and tremendous potential,” the third-year Wildcat coach said. Coming off a 9-4... Keep Reading

If ever there was team that was looking forward to “next season,” it must be the 2018 Lutcher Bulldogs. Lutcher was coming off back-to-back state championships going into 2017. Playing with a young and rebuild team while making the move from Class 3A to Class 4A, the Bulldogs had a not-so-Lutcher like 4-7 season. “When you look back at it, 2009 was the first year we played in 4A and that was a team that... Things have certainly changed at Riverside Academy. “I’ve said several times if you had asked me this time last year, ‘are you going to be a head coach anywhere?’ The answer would have been ‘absolutely not.’ It’s not something I was expecting or looking forward to, but you never know when God’s going to call your number. That’s where we’re... Keep Reading
