A joyous start to the year gave no foreshadowing to the type of season the West St. John Rams would endure in 2014. Going into the season opener against St. John, there were a number of subplots. The most overlooked was the kicking game. In some years, West St. John’s place kicking was so woeful the Rams went for a two-point conversion every time after scoring a touchdown. Against St. James, Anfernee Lumar kicked... Keep Reading

Few season-opening games could match the headline-grabbing nature of Riverside Academy’s encounter with Evangel Christian. Going into the game, the Eagles seemed to have the advantage. Not only did Riverside have to make the long journey to Shreveport, the Rebels had to content with an Evangel squad while starting a freshman at quarterback. Following the 2013 season, the Rebels seemed poised to have a big year behind Deuce Wallace. The highly-regarded Wallace was scheduled... Keep Reading

Expectations were high for Destrehan going into the 2014 season, and with good reason. With versatile athletes like Kirk Merritt and Alfred Smith, along with running back Will Matthews returning on offense, along with a veteran offensive line and imposing defensive front, experienced talent seemed to be all over the field. In the season opener at home against West Jefferson, Randy Harvey kicked a field goal on the Wildcats’ opening possession of the game while... Keep Reading

St. Charles Catholic got off to a strong start in 2014, winning four of its five pre-district games. Playing as the “visiting” team on their home field, St. Charles started the season with a 31-12 victory over Southern Lab, which could not secure a venue for the season-opening game. The Comets looked ready to play from the beginning of the game when Erron Lewis returned the opening kick 78 yards which led to a 12-yard... Keep Reading

A new era in Hahnville football couldn’t have gotten off to a much better start. Hahnville amassed 222 yards on the ground by halftime. Defensively, Hahnville held the Spartans to 15 yards on 12 attempts. Salmen... Keep Reading

Few teams generated season-opener excitement in 2014 like the St. James Wildcats. Coming off a Class 2A quarterfinal appearance in 2013 under first-year coach Dwain Jenkins, put the bad taste of back-to-back winning seasons behind them. Along with the excitement that came with the playoff run a year earlier, all eyes were on St. James’ season opener against West St. John. Taking on rival West St. John to open the season always has caused a lot... Keep Reading

Coming off an injury-plagued season in which Lutcher went an uncharacteristic 5-6, including an opening-round playoff loss to LaGrange, Bulldogs fans had something to smile about at the beginning of the 2014 season when LHS got off to a 3-0 start against some hefty competition. Lutcher broke a 7-7 tie in the season opener at Dutchtown on a 75-yard fumble return for a touchdown by linebacker Ricky Ross. A 30-yard run by Bulldogs sophomore linebacker Jontre... Keep Reading

A typically-tough pre-district schedule greeted East St. John for the start of the 2014 season. The Wildcats faced one of the toughest Week 1 tests when East St. John opened the season against Rummel, a two-time defending state champion. East St. John was unable to stop Raiders running back Maurice Bailey, who topped 100 yards rushing and quarterback Chase Fourcade, who accounted for three touchdowns in Rummel’s 39-0 blanking of the Wildcats. It was the second-consecutive... Keep Reading

St. Charles Catholic quarterback Austin Weber passed for three touchdowns and ran for three more as the Comets bounced back from last week’s loss to East Ascension with a 49-6 non-district home win over Miller-McCoy. Despite the lopsided victory, St. Charles coach Frank Monica said his team did not look sharp. “We came out really sluggish,” Monica said. “You have to give Miller-McCoy credit; they had two weeks to prepare...
