Three area schools to compete in new classifications next year

Three of the eight River Parish schools will be in new classifications for the start of the 2017-18 school year after the final basic districts were announced by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association on Wednesday in Baton Rouge. You maybe could call it the new Rebel Alliance. A better name for it might be the Louisiana Select High School Athletic Association. After Friday’s vote by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to not only retain the select/non-select playoff format in football but to expand it to baseball, basketball and softball, talk has arisen about private schools completely breaking away from the LHSAA. Not only will there continue to be nine championship brackets in high school football, starting with the 2016-17 school year, the format will be expanded to include baseball, basketball and softball. It’s now official – Lutcher and St. James are rivals. Following the third, and final, reclassification meeting Wednesday, Lutcher and St. James were placed in the same district starting with the 2015-16 school year.
