The goals for Thursday’s spring game against visiting Terrebonne seemed to work pretty well for Frank Monica and his St. Charles Comets. “I went into the scrimmage thinking I really wanted to work on our passing game,” Monica said. “If you can’t protect it, though, it doesn’t matter if the routes are open or not. I think we protected pretty good, for the most part.” ... Keep Reading

With both teams playing without their starting running backs, Destrehan’s spring game at Covington on Wednesday was a low-scoring affair. Destrehan’s younger runners had the better outing as Kyle Edwards and Ed’Juan Green scored the only two touchdowns in the controlled portion of the spring game while neither team scored in a 15-minute quarter to conclude the evening. “We made too many mistakes for a spring game. The... Keep Reading

It may only be spring but it looks like West St. John already has found the latest in the long line of workhorse running backs. Nico Davis powered his way to 149 yards on 20 carries as the Rams defeated McMain 21-8 in West St. John spring game Saturday in Edgard. “We definitely have a next-man-up philosophy here and he’s been tearing it up this spring. Our guys don’t want to tackle... Keep Reading

It may appear that when you are a two-time defending state champion, you can start practice as late as you want to. That may have seemed like the case for Lutcher’s football team but there was more to it than just a late debut for the 2017 Bulldogs. “We were just trying to make sure we just had as many guys here as possible,” said Dwain Jenkins, who is conducting his second... The baseball resume at St. Charles is loaded with hardware, but something is missing. Eight state runner-up trophies have no state titles to keep them company. Close but no cigar, the Buffalo Bills, perennial bridesmaids. Don't worry, the Comets have heard them all. Just ask head coach Wayne Stein. As a player (1998), assistant coach (2004, '07, '08, '09) and head coach (2016) Stein has been a part of six of the Comets eight state runner-up teams and knows first-hand... Keep Reading

April showers, May flowers and Frank Monica conducting practice as a high school football coach are sure signs that spring has arrived. Monica and his St. Charles Catholic Comets were back at it Monday afternoon with the start of spring practice. “We were sluggish but we threw a lot at them, so that was to be expected,” Monica assessed. “We need to correct that because we will only get eight or nine... Things were different, yet much the same, for Riverside Academy’s first day of spring practice Monday afternoon. Chris Lachney is in his first year as the Rebels’ head coach, elevated to the top job following the retirement of Bill Stubbs. Still serving as his own defensive coordinator, Lachney was ever-present presence on the field as he’s always been. “I’m still very much involved on what we are... Keep Reading

Nick Saltaformaggio was in a thankful mood Thursday afternoon. “It feels like Thanksgiving Week. It’s great,” the fourth-year Hahnville coach said during the Tigers’ opening day of spring football practice. It was easy to confuse the seasons Thursday. After days and several inches of rain, the Tigers were able to get on the field for the first day of drills. In place of the rain came a mix of intermittent... Keep Reading

The Riverside Academy Rebels will have to make the most of limited opportunities in 2017. Scheduling confusion has left the defending Division III state champions with only eight regular-season games. An odd number of teams in District 11-2A meant an open date in league play. For Riverside, the open date fell in Week 10, so the Rebels opted not to fill the date a week leading into the start of the playoffs. Riverside also has an... Keep Reading
