THIBODAUX - Maybe it had something to do with Lucky 13 but the football gods didn’t rain on Archie Manning and the Manning Passing Academy. Days of rain related to an approaching Tropical Storm Cindy had the Manning Passing Academy in doubt earlier in the week. When camp time arrived Thursday, conditions for the 13th edition of the MPA to be held on the Nicholls campus were surprisingly dry. “Monday night, you don... Keep Reading

What a difference a year makes. Last year Lutcher only sent one player to the Offensive/Defensive Lineman Camp in Thibodaux. Bulldogs offensive line coach Josef Venus made sure that number would increase this season. "We were lucky enough to bring ten guys this year," said Venus. "After last season, we put together two fundraisers and were able to raise money to pay for the camp." The prestigious camp sponsored by Thibodaux Regional Medical Center... Keep Reading

When you go to the Offensive/Lineman Camp in Thibodaux, you're never quite sure who you might bump into. Maybe it's LSU defensive line coach Pete Jenkins, 8-time Pro Bowl center Kevin Mawae, or this year new Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen. But the one thing that always seems to be consistent is a strong presence of Riverside players and coaches. Rebels offensive line coach Joe Trosclair now in his third year... Keep Reading

THIBODAUX - There’s just something special about the Offensive-Defensive Line Camp for a newcomer. “I love it,” said Cody Pellissier, who will be a sophomore offensive lineman at Riverside Academy in the fall. “It teaches you fundamentals and steps. I used to be terrible with my steps but now I will be so much better when we get in games and practices.” “It really helps me better my... Keep Reading

River Parish teams again left their mark at the annual state Airo 7x7 Tournament Thursday at St. Amant High School. East St. led the way, finishing second overall. The Wildcats went 4-0 in pool play, then advanced all the way to the championship game where they fell just short, falling to St. Aug 23-14. St. James went 3-1 in pool play and advanced to the semifinals before they too were knocked off by eventual state... Keep Reading

It took longer to prepare to postgame jambalaya Wednesday than it did for Lutcher’s intra-squad scrimmage to close spring practice. Some spring games can take longer than a regular-season game but the Bulldogs made quick work of things by finishing up their scrimmage in less than 90 minutes. “I just thought we got enough possessions in and didn’t want to risk any injuries. Injuries happen when kids get tired. We just... Keep Reading

The goals for Thursday’s spring game against visiting Terrebonne seemed to work pretty well for Frank Monica and his St. Charles Comets. “I went into the scrimmage thinking I really wanted to work on our passing game,” Monica said. “If you can’t protect it, though, it doesn’t matter if the routes are open or not. I think we protected pretty good, for the most part.” ... Keep Reading

With both teams playing without their starting running backs, Destrehan’s spring game at Covington on Wednesday was a low-scoring affair. Destrehan’s younger runners had the better outing as Kyle Edwards and Ed’Juan Green scored the only two touchdowns in the controlled portion of the spring game while neither team scored in a 15-minute quarter to conclude the evening. “We made too many mistakes for a spring game. It may only be spring but it looks like West St. John already has found the latest in the long line of workhorse running backs. Nico Davis powered his way to 149 yards on 20 carries as the Rams defeated McMain 21-8 in West St. John spring game Saturday in Edgard. “We definitely have a next-man-up philosophy here and he’s been tearing it up this spring. Our guys don’t want to tackle... Keep Reading

It may appear that when you are a two-time defending state champion, you can start practice as late as you want to. That may have seemed like the case for Lutcher’s football team but there was more to it than just a late debut for the 2017 Bulldogs. “We were just trying to make sure we just had as many guys here as possible,” said Dwain Jenkins, who is conducting his second...
