A total of 14 candidates have applied for the position of head football coach and athletic director at East St. John, according to officials of the St. John Parish Schools system on Thursday afternoon.
Among the applicants are Brandon Brown, Corey Lambert and Damon Mason, all previously reported by RiverParishFootball.com.
East St. John is searching for a new coach and athletic director following the dismissal of Alton Foster earlier this year.
Other applicants include Rysean Brown, Antoine Carter, Cyril Crutchfield, Brandon Dumas, Gregory Gathers, Patrick Hall, Felton Huggins, Chadwick Lewis, Derrick Lewis, Richard Oliver and Harold Robert.
Brown currently is the head coach at St. Helena College and Career Academy.
He is fresh off of leading St. Helena College to a Class 2A state final appearance where the Hawks lost to Welsh 38-26.
An alumnus of East St. John, Brown has posted a five-year record of 36-25 at St. Helena with his Hawks improving their record in each of the years he has been at the helm.
Taking over a program that had a total of four wins in the three seasons prior to his arrival, Brown’s first squad at St. Helena posted a 2-9 mark in 2013.
His 2014 Hawks went 3-8 and St. Helena improved to 8-3 the following season. St. Helena went 11-2 in 2016, losing to Madison Prep 31-6 in the semifinals.
Lambert was the coach at John Ehret for five years, including leading the Patriots to the Class 5A state championship game in 2015 when they lost 46-12 to Zachary.
A former Ehret quarterback, Lambert served as offensive coordinator of the Patriots for three years before being promoted to head coach in 2012.
After failing to win a game in 2012, Lambert’s Ehret squads never won less the nine games in each of the following four years. His five-year record as coach of the Patriots was 40-20.
Lambert was out of coaching in 2017.
A native of Laplace, Mason played high school football at Destrehan and went on to play for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
He played for current Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden and the Orlando Predators in the Arena Football League from 1998-2001. Mason went on to play for the New Jersey/Las Vegas Gladiators, Carolina Cobras, Grand Rapids Rampage, Austin Wranglers, Utah Blaze and New Orleans Voodoo.
Mason had three other stints with Orlando in 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010. He retired from the Arena League in 2010 but came out of retirement to play the final six games of the 2011 season with the Voodoo.
He closed out a 13-year playing career as the AFL’s all-time leading tackler while making the all-league team three times.
While playing in the AFL, Mason began coaching at Dunwoody High in Georgia. He later formed Level Up Athletic Marketing to help provide exposure for high school student athletes.
Mason served as defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Sharks, who won the National Arena League title in 2017.
Among the more prominent names are Crutchfield, Gathers and Derrick Lewis.
Crutchfield is the current head coach at West Jefferson and has had previous head coaching stints at St. Augustine and South Plaquemines.
Gathers is a former East St. John and Georgia Tech player and once served as an assistant at Destrehan under current Wildcats coach Stephen Robicheaux.
Derrick Lewis is a former receiver with the New Orleans Saints and has served as a coach at Lake Area New Tech.
Rysean Brown recently completed his first year as an assistant wide receiver coach at East St. John.
Carter serves as disciplinarian with at East St. John Prep Academy and is a former assistant coach at East St. John and West St. John.
Dumas is an assistant coach at West St. John.
Hall is a defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at Zachary High. He has had past stints as an assistant coach at such schools as Denham Springs, Ruston and Port Allen.
Huggins is the wide receiver coach and recruiting coordinator at LaGrange College in Georgia.
Chadwick Lewis is the offensive coordinator at Port Allen.
Oliver currently is the defensive coordinator at Livonia High.
Robert has been in coaching for over 30 years. He is dean of students at Northlake Christian and a former defensive coordinator at the school.
