West St. John showed the signs of being a young football team in the Rams’ spring game Saturday morning against visiting Southern Lab. There were false starts by the offense, offside penalties against the defense and a pair of young, inexperienced quarterback who were a bit too quick in getting rid of the football. At the start, it came as no surprise that the bigger, deeper Kittens were able to march right down the... Keep Reading

NEW ORLEANS – “I give us maybe a C-plus. In my mind, it’s not as good as it needs to be but we have to realize who we are playing as well,” assessed East St. John football coach Phillip Banko following his team’s spring game Friday against Landry-Walker. Some of the Wildcat players might have found their coach’s grading system fairly lenient. “We have a lot... Keep Reading

A pair of River Parish coaches came away pleased with the performances of their teams during spring games Friday. “I thought our offensive line played well. That was a question mark. We have a couple of new starters in the offensive line. I thought they handled themselves well. They played real aggressively. I was pleased with the way we ran the ball. Maybe it was the low humidity, cool temperatures and soothing breeze, but the St. James Wildcats looked more like they were in midseason form instead of closing out spring practice while hosting St. Helena Central in a spring game Friday. The Wildcats’ first-team defense held St. Helena Central to only one first down the entire scrimmage while the St. James offense scored on seven of nine possessions for a 42-0 win over the Hawks. ... After starting the season at 3-9, no one panicked when No. 3 Riverside fell behind 7-3 to No. 22 Runnels in the 2A Quarterfinals. Good thing. For a first spring game under a new head coach, things went about pretty much as expected as Hahnville hosted Scotlandville on Monday to close out spring practice. “I thought we were good in spots, I thought we were bad in spots.
