West St. John’s 32-27 win last week over Ascension Catholic did more than just get the Rams get a step closer to another district title. It also helped the Rams gain experience against a style of offense they are likely to face down the road. Going into the Ascension Catholic game, West St. John faced a steady diet of spread offenses.  From now through a hoped-for march to the Superdome, the Rams... Keep Reading

Halloween was still a day away, yet the turnover goblins slowed up once again for the Lutcher Bulldogs. The Bulldogs fumbled the ball away three times in the first half before settling down to take a 43-16 District 6-4A home win over Belaire. “I don’t know where we were the first half,” Lutcher coach Tim Detillier said. “Offensively, we had five possessions. We scored two touchdowns and we fumbled... Keep Reading

The Thibodaux Tigers reminded East St. John coach Phillip Banko a bit of his 2013 Wildcats when the two teams met last Friday. “Thibodaux has what we had last year – the offensive and defensive lines are seniors and this is their year,” Banko said. It added up to a 35-21 win for the Tigers. “We had a turnover going into the end zone, which is a (potential) score. We had a fumble... Keep Reading

It was mission accomplished for St. Charles Catholic last week against McMain. “We went into the ball game trying to reestablish our two-back system. We thought we had gotten away from that and our play-action passes off of that and the short passing game. We went in trying to reestablish ourselves as physical up front and using our fullback a little bit more in the blocking schemes and handing the ball to our tailbacks,... Keep Reading

Riverside Academy may be unbeaten on the season but the Rebels are far from perfect in the eyes of coach Bill Stubbs. That’s even after a 40-0 blanking of South Plaquemines last week. “Although it might not look like a lot at that time, if you get caught figuring I don’t have to go all-out, somewhere down the line it will come back and get you. You don’t... Keep Reading

With a plethora of offensive talent, it’s not a matter of as goes the quarterback, so goes the team’s success for a program like Destrehan. Still, it doesn’t hurt any when Marquise Darensbourg can have a performance like he had last week against South Lafourche when the sophomore quarterback passed for two touchdowns and rushed to two more to direct a Destrehan offense to more than 500 total yards in... A funny thing happened to Hahnville’s option offense as the 2014 season has progressed for the Tigers. “We’ve been getting better at it every week,” Hahnville coach Nick Saltaformaggio said of throwing the football. “It’s something I’m becoming more and more comfortable with. The negative of it is we are not running it particularly well. Our inside run game is not very good. It&rsquo... Keep Reading

When St. James plays football Friday afternoon, the Wildcats have to realize the game really counts. At a time when the Wildcats are normally in practice mode, St. James will be playing an actual game when SJH faces Carver at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans. The unusual game time presents a few unusual circumstances, according to St. James coach Dwain Jenkins. “It’s been a lot of things... Keep Reading

Sometimes, the other team is simply better. Lutcher found that out last week in a 28-14 loss at defending District 6-4A champion Plaquemine. “We didn’t match up well,” Bulldogs coach Tim Detillier said. “Plaquemine is definitely a better team. They were bigger, faster and stronger. We knew that going in. They wanted to shorten the game and limit our touches. They ran the clock and controlled both lines of... Keep Reading
