By the time Alden Foster had arrived at Fatty’s Restaurant in Garyville on National Signing Day it was already a good day. Foster had just left his former school at Amite where nine of his 12 seniors had signed letters-of-intent to play college. At the East St. John signing party he would watch eight Wildcats do the same. After the ceremony, Foster the new ESJ head coach and athletic director sat down with RPF... Keep Reading

With Lutcher dropping down from Class 4A and St. James moving up from Class 2A following the initial reclassification meeting of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association on Wednesday, the two schools preliminarily have been reunited in District 9-3A, starting with the 2015-16 school year. As District opponents, the two rivals would have each other in the regular season for the... Keep Reading

College football has long been about the option. In Louisiana, Louisiana College, a Division III school in Pineville, has given prep players an option to pursue and education while continuing to play football. “There are a lot more football players than there are Division I scholarships available in the River Parishes, that’s why we put a high priority for us in recruiting because there are a lot of excellent players that fall... The River Parishes, as usual, provided its share of players to various college football programs on National Signing Day. Guys like Kirk Merritt going to Oregon and Xavier Lewis to LSU garner the national headlines, but there are a number of players each year from the River Parishes that get to continue their playing career and earn a college education below the Football Bowl Subdivision level. A total of 30 players from around the River Parishes... Keep Reading

Morrell Bartholomew noticed something right away with the coaching staff of new Nicholls State football coach Tim Rebowe. “I like that they are always amped up,” Bartholomew said. “They want to win and bring Nicholls football back and I want to be part of that class that does it.” “If we are not excited about what we are doing, how can you get some other ones to be excited,”... A joyous start to the year gave no foreshadowing to the type of season the West St. John Rams would endure in 2014. Going into the season opener against St. John, there were a number of subplots. The most overlooked was the kicking game. In some years, West St. John’s place kicking was so woeful the Rams went for a two-point conversion every time after scoring a touchdown. Against St. James, Anfernee Lumar kicked... Keep Reading

Few season-opening games could match the headline-grabbing nature of Riverside Academy’s encounter with Evangel Christian. Going into the game, the Eagles seemed to have the advantage. Not only did Riverside have to make the long journey to Shreveport, the Rebels had to content with an Evangel squad while starting a freshman at quarterback. Following the 2013 season, the Rebels seemed poised to have a big year behind Deuce Wallace. The highly-regarded Wallace was scheduled... Keep Reading

Expectations were high for Destrehan going into the 2014 season, and with good reason. With versatile athletes like Kirk Merritt and Alfred Smith, along with running back Will Matthews returning on offense, along with a veteran offensive line and imposing defensive front, experienced talent seemed to be all over the field. In the season opener at home against West Jefferson, Randy Harvey kicked a field goal on the Wildcats’ opening possession of the game while... Keep Reading
