Riverside Academy has veteran players returning on both sides of the ball but the Rebels seem to go through a yearly changing of guard at quarterback. When the Rebels open the 2015 season, it will be with an underclassman starting at quarterback for the third year in a row. Talented gunslinger Deuce Wallace transferred back to his native Tennessee following his sophomore season in 2013. Jordan Loving, a freshman, handled the chores a year ago. A lingering... “You look at us and you look at them and that’s not supposed to happen – and I knew they wouldn’t quit,” Lutcher coach Tim Detillier said after the Bulldogs’ jamboree game Friday night at Destrehan, looking at a scoreboard that read: Bulldogs 26, Wildcats 21. Although it was a jamboree, Detillier rarely demonstrates outward emotion he showed Friday night. “I’m passionate about my team,” the... Keep Reading

The two new head coaches in the River Parishes are still seeking their first victories of the season. Brandon Walters’ West St. John Rams took advantage of numerous penalties by Amite to score on a 70-yard drive, took advantage of a short field for another score and came up with a big defensive stand to salvage a 14-14 tie in the first game of the East St. John Jamboree on Thursday night at Joe... Former Hahnville coach Lou Valdin used to call the jamboree a dress rehearsal for special teams. Most of the current River Parish coaches follow that mantra. “Now we will involve special teams. We have to get our special teams cranked up. We need to get them organized and get them ready for the first ball game. Special teams plays a big part of field position,” said St. Charles Catholic coach Frank Monica. Monica... Keep Reading

Whenever a team loses the offensive firepower the likes of Kirk Merritt, Alfred Smith and Will Matthews, plus its entire starting offensive line like Destrehan, no ordinary team could expect a return trip to the state finals. Most opponents agree, Destrehan is no ordinary team. Whether or not the Wildcats make another long playoff run in 2015 remains to be seen but all Destrehan fans have to do is look at the other side of the... Keep Reading

With nine starters back on offense and seven on defense, expectations, as always, are high at West St. John. About the only thing gone from a team that went 10-3 and reached the Class 1A semifinals last year is head coach Robert Valdez. Valdez parlayed his tremendous success with the Rams into the head job at Class 5A Scotlandville. With Valdez leaving only weeks before the start of fall practice and with the school looking... With 25 seniors back from a 9-3 team, expectations are again high at St. Charles Catholic. “I’m looking for maturity from this football team. I’m looking for leadership and I expect a high-character football team this season,” St. Charles coach Frank Monica said. Finally getting a chance to guide the Comets’ offense is senior quarterback Patrick Ratliff. “He’s been the quarterback in waiting for a long... Keep Reading

Hahnville’s offense appears to be out of options for the 2015 football season. “I’m a big believer in the double-shot option game but it didn’t fit what we were doing,” second-year Tigers coach Nick Saltaformaggio said. “From a personnel standpoint, we didn’t have the dynamic, kind of fast-twitch muscle quarterback and we didn’t have the tall, fast fullback we need to run it. ... It’s not exactly the St. James football team Wildcat fans expected to see. Wildcat fans were looking forward to a St. James team that featured strong-armed quarterback Lowell Narcisse connected on long touchdown bombs to a bevy of receivers, especially big-play Dontaze Costly. That began to unravel in the spring when the Wildcats lost Narcisse to a knee injury. The injury will cost the Auburn verbal commitment his junior season. Costly, in turn,... Keep Reading

When it comes to football, Lutcher is back where it belongs.  “Our numbers are down but our expectations are up. Everybody is excited we’re 3A. We’ve always been 3A and that’s where we belong. The last two years, we played in 4A with 3A enrollment,” veteran Bulldogs coach Tim Detillier said. The return to Class 3A also coincides with a number of players back for the... Keep Reading
