Lori Preston could immediately notice the difference between Saturday’s St. James Wildcat Women’s Football Camp and the inaugural event of a year ago. “It was an awesome camp. It was a great time but it was just firing hot,” Preston said of last year’s event. “This time we have a nice breeze and beautiful day. It makes it much more comfortable to be out here.” ... A couple of things were different during West St. John’s opening day of spring football practice Thursday afternoon. “I’m excited to be back here with (the Rams players) with the ‘smell of the turf,’” said West St. John coach Brandon Walters. In past years, the start of spring allowed the Rams to “smell the grass.” During spring practice last season, the team’s field... Keep Reading

Things are running a bit more smoothly from a year ago for the start of spring football practice at St. James. “It’s a little bit more in order. By the time I got to spring last year, I was about a month-and-a-half on the job. I know the kids a lot better. We’ve had a chance to plan a lot better and we’ve done a really good job... Maybe Nick Saltaformaggio will settle for a neutral site. “This will be my fifth time coaching against Destrehan and four of the five have been at Destrehan. It’s just the way it’s been the luck of the draw for me,” said Saltaformaggio, who will be in his fourth season as Hahnville coach in 2017. For the third year in a row, Hahnville will meet Destrehan in the district opener in... Keep Reading

It seems the St. James Wildcats just can’t wait to take on their rivals. St. James opens the 2017 season at nearby West St. John in Edgard in the annual Railroad Classic before hosting Lutcher and E.D. White. “It’s always good to play those local rivalries,” said St. James coach Robert Valdez. “It’s what the fans want to see. The communities have strong programs. West St.... Keep Reading

The first day of spring football practice at Destrehan on Tuesday had the look of a Head Start program. Following the departure of veterans such as quarterback Kohen Granier, running back Kristian Mosley, receivers Mike Smith and Justin Jefferson, along with defenders Jaece Stroud and Kieran Webb, the Wildcats return one of their least-experienced teams in recent memory. “We all got dressed, so that’s a good thing. They all put their helmets... Keep Reading

East St. John managed to reach the .500 mark to conclude the 2016 regular season before falling to Barbe in the opening round of the playoffs to conclude 5-6. An early season stretch may be the key for the Wildcats to improve upon those numbers this year under third-year coach Alden Foster. After opening the season at Plaquemine, East St. John played the next two non-district games at home against West Jefferson and McDonogh 35. “Plaquemine is... Keep Reading

After a two-year stint in which West St. John elected to play up in classification, the Rams are returning to their natural Class 1A status in 2017. That means West St. John will be facing schools with similar enrollment and squad sizes, but before the Rams get to that point, they will have to face a pre-district slate that includes games against larger schools – a WSJ tradition. “I wanted to play some 5A and ... A proposal within the National Collegiate Athletic Association to allow Division I football recruits to sign an early National Letter of Intent is a win-win proposition for athletes and schools, most River Parish high school coaches agree. The proposal, which would need approval by the Collegiate Commissioners Association to create the new NLI, would create an earlier signing period. Although no specific date has been established, all indications point to a December signing period. The... Keep Reading
