If anyone had mentioned a Destrehan-Barbe postseason matchup at the beginning of the season, many would likely have figured the encounter well after the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. Yet, that’s where the teams find themselves when the Wildcats host the Buccaneers on Friday night. Destrehan, the No. 8 seed, is coming off a 33-14 triumph over Alexandria, while Barbe, the No. 9 seed, dominated Parkway 52-6. The Wildcats enter the game at ... Keep Reading

When East St. John coach Alden Foster was asked to talk about Destrehan’s offense prior to the Week 6 battle of Wildcats, the ESJ coach said, “John Emery, John Emery, John Emery, John Emery.” He may have been tempted to utter “Pooka” four times when talking about Hahnville’s offense – East St. John’s opponent in a key District 7-5A showdown Friday night at Joe Keller... Members of the River Parishes’ high school football coaching community weren’t mincing words following Wednesday’s action by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. “They have some bona fide idiots that have gotten themselves into the management of athletics and have not a clue. They are only concerned about protecting one little corner of the world. They certainly are not looking at the overall picture and the good of Louisiana... Keep Reading

You maybe could call it the new Rebel Alliance. A better name for it might be the Louisiana Select High School Athletic Association. After Friday’s vote by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to not only retain the select/non-select playoff format in football but to expand it to baseball, basketball and softball, talk has arisen about private schools completely breaking away from the LHSAA. At least that’s the sentiment of... Keep Reading

Not only will there continue to be nine championship brackets in high school football, starting with the 2016-17 school year, the format will be expanded to include baseball, basketball and softball. That’s the outcome following a vote by Louisiana High School Athletic Association principals at the organization’s meeting Friday in Baton Rouge. By a vote of 182-120, the organization decided to not only continue the select/non-select split in football but... Keep Reading

The vote by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association on Friday, as far as football was concerned, was much ado about nothing. The LHSAA tabled a proposal to alter the football postseason playoff brackets between select and non-select schools, meaning it’s the status quo for at least another year. That leaves football with five non-select championship brackets and a four-bracket setup for select schools. “I think it was the best thing to... Keep Reading
