The Riverside Academy Rebels will have to make the most of limited opportunities in 2017. Scheduling confusion has left the defending Division III state champions with only eight regular-season games. An odd number of teams in District 11-2A meant an open date in league play. For Riverside, the open date fell in Week 10, so the Rebels opted not to fill the date a week leading into the start of the playoffs. Riverside also has an... Keep Reading

The Destrehan Wildcats’ dance card is full for 2017. In the past two years, Destrehan has drawn its bye date in District 7-5A in Week 10. Unable to find an opponent to play, the Wildcats only had nine games in each of the past two regular seasons. That changes this year as the Wildcats conclude the regular season in Week 10 at Terrebonne. Destrehan drew Week 9 as its bye week but the Wildcats were able to... Keep Reading

After back-to-back state titles, the Lutcher Bulldogs are in need of a new challenge. The challenge will come in the form of a not-so-new but improved Class 4A district. The last time Lutcher was in Class 4A, the Bulldogs were in a Baton Rouge-based district. Lutcher is back in the same district where the Bulldogs and Plaquemine were the top two teams of an otherwise weak football league. That’s not likely to be... Keep Reading

St. Charles Catholic had to seek out various locales to put together it’s pre-district schedule as the Comets return to Class 3A for the 2017 season. District 10-3A will provide the likes of St. James, Donaldsonville, De La Salle, Lusher and Haynes Academy. Before getting to the league slate, the Comets had to find five non-district opponents. The opening week finds St. Charles playing at Chalmette. “Chalmette will be a really tough... Keep Reading

Maybe Nick Saltaformaggio will settle for a neutral site. “This will be my fifth time coaching against Destrehan and four of the five have been at Destrehan. It’s just the way it’s been the luck of the draw for me,” said Saltaformaggio, who will be in his fourth season as Hahnville coach in 2017. For the third year in a row, Hahnville will meet Destrehan in the district opener in... Keep Reading

It seems the St. James Wildcats just can’t wait to take on their rivals. St. James opens the 2017 season at nearby West St. John in Edgard in the annual Railroad Classic before hosting Lutcher and E.D. White. “It’s always good to play those local rivalries,” said St. James coach Robert Valdez. “It’s what the fans want to see. The communities have strong programs. West St.... Keep Reading

East St. John managed to reach the .500 mark to conclude the 2016 regular season before falling to Barbe in the opening round of the playoffs to conclude 5-6. An early season stretch may be the key for the Wildcats to improve upon those numbers this year under third-year coach Alden Foster. After opening the season at Plaquemine, East St. John played the next two non-district games at home against West Jefferson and McDonogh 35. “Plaquemine is... Keep Reading

After a two-year stint in which West St. John elected to play up in classification, the Rams are returning to their natural Class 1A status in 2017. That means West St. John will be facing schools with similar enrollment and squad sizes, but before the Rams get to that point, they will have to face a pre-district slate that includes games against larger schools – a WSJ tradition. “I wanted to play some 5A and ... Sometimes, you have to be careful what you wish for. “You want to play guys in our pre-district schedule that will test you. Slidell, Woodlawn and John Ehret are big programs that do a tremendous job. I really like what the pre-district does for us. It will be very challenging for us this year. It will be a schedule that will get us ready for that district run,” Destrehan coach Stephen Robicheaux said. ... Keep Reading

If anyone ever doubted Dwain Jenkins’ love of home, all you have to do is look at Lutcher’s 2016 football schedule. After a three-year stint as head coach at St. James, Jenkins returns to Lutcher as top dog, where he and his Bulldogs will play eight home games this season. “We talked a lot about home and defending the Dog Yard and being a family and getting to play in front of...
