Riverside Academy faced a bit of everything early in the Rebels’ final scrimmage Saturday morning to conclude spring practice. Only two plays into scrimmage, the defense came up with a big play on an interception by linebacker Nick Washington. On the next play from scrimmage, the offense responded on an 80-yard touchdown run down the left sideline by running back Chamar Jackson. The offense then marched on a sustained 80-yard drive, including a key... Keep Reading

Unlike most River Parish football teams, the Lutcher Bulldogs opted to end spring practice with an intra-squad scrimmage Thursday rather than face an opponent. “What it did is it gave us time to teach,” Lutcher coach Dwain Jenkins said of no spring game. “What we were able to do on Monday and Tuesday was really slow down and not have to prepare for somebody. We were able to go in and make... Keep Reading

Two old buddies decided to get together to have some fun on the field and decided to bring their teams along. That’s why a River Parish team like Hahnville was taking a team from Mississippi in a spring game Thursday night in Boutte. Nick Saltaformaggio and his Tigers got the best of Eric Collins and his d’Iberville Warriors in both a timed quarter of action and in situational play. Hahnville dominated... Keep Reading

Destrehan showed early in its Spring Game on Wednesday that the Wildcats continue to have quick-strike ability. In a scrimmage that feature Destrehan’s first- and second-team units alternating series against visiting Covington, the Wildcats scored twice in their opening set of 12 plays. Over at West St. John’s three-team scrimmage against Riverdale and KIPP-Booker T. Washington, the Rams scored early as well but it was the WSJ defense that looked rock solid. ... Keep Reading

NEW ORLEANS – St. James found out early Saturday afternoon in its three-team scrimmage to conclude spring practice what the Wildcats are capable of and what they need to work on. In the scrimmage played at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium, St. James faced both St. Augustine and Helen Cox. Each team squared off against the other in a series of 15-play possessions. When David Charles drove down the tree-lined road of the St. James campus Thursday afternoon, he couldn’t help but think of 1979. The Wildcats were playing Wossman for the Class 3A state championship. The game wound up 8-8 after regulation. A new overtime rule would decide the outcome. Wossman won the toss and elected to get the ball first. A stout Wildcat defense stopped Wossman on four downs on the possession that began at... Keep Reading

It would be wise to take the over in an over/under option when it comes to the times Frank Monica has said something similar to the following when assessing his football team: “We don’t know what we are doing. We are completely lost. We don’t know our plays on offense.” That was Monica on Tuesdayreferring to his St. Charles Comets four days into spring practice. “The state... Keep Reading

Brandon Brown was East St. John’s man in motion Tuesday afternoon. On the opening day of spring football practice, the Wildcats’ new head coach was bouncing around from work station to work station with boundless energy. “That’s probably the biggest adjustment, coming here from where I was at St. Helena. Being a 2A program, I was more hands-on. I was coaching a position, just because we didn’t... Keep Reading

Capturing the Class 1A state title has served as sort of a seal of approval of what the West St. John Rams have felt all along. “We always felt we had a target on our back,” said West St. John coach Brandon Walters on the second day of the Rams’ spring practice session on Thursday. “We get the best from everybody. We know we have a target on our backs. Now,... Keep Reading
