Unable to generate much offense, St. Charles Catholic led only 7-6 through three quarters before scoring twice in the fourth quarter to defeat visiting Wilkinson County of Mississippi 21-6 Friday night.

Clinging to a one-point advantage, the Comets marched 60 yards in 10 plays, capping the drive on a 2-yard run by Joe Chiarella to increase their lead to 14-6 less than a minute into the fourth quarter.

St. Charles (2-1) sealed the victory with a 10-yard run by Trey Lowry to make it 21-6 with 5:30 left in the game.

The Comets’ defense set up a short field for the offense most of the night with St. Charles’ average starting field position being its own 46-yard line.

A struggling SCC offense, however, was unable to take advantage of the favorable field position for most of the night. St. Charles’ only touchdown came on its opening possession of the game when the Comets moved 56 yards in seven plays.

Sutton Bourgeois, starting in place of injured Justin Dumas at quarterback, tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Logan Forsythe to give St. Charles a 7-0 lead at the 4:21 mark of the first quarter.

St. Charles finished with 193 total yards, 168 on the ground. Chiarella led the way with 69 yards on 19 carries while Phillip Tran added 65 yards on 15 attempts.

Wilkson Country (3-2) struggled mightily against the SCC defense. Including sacks, the Comets defense held the Wildcats to 57 yards of total offense and 1 of 9 on third down.

The Wildcats’ only score came on a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown by Trevion Miles at the 8:46 mark of the second quarter.
