Veteran big-play runners and receivers, an imposing offensive line and one of the top defenses in the state has kept Destrehan unbeaten all season.
Friday night for Homecoming, sophomore quarterback Marquise Darensbourg proved to be much more than a caretaker of the offense, passing for two touchdowns and rushing for two more in the Wildcats’ 55-0 drubbing of South Lafourche in District 7-5A action Friday night.
Darensbourg directed a balanced offense that amassed almost 500 yards of total offense as the second-ranked Wildcats improved to 8-0 on the season and 5-0 in District 7-5A play. South Lafourche fell to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in district.
The sophomore quarterback got the scoring started early on a 40-yard touchdown run and a quick 7-0 lead to cap the opening drive of the game.
Darensbourg’s second touchdown came via the air when he hooked up with Alfred Smith on a 12-yard pass to give the Wildcats a 14-0 advantage.
Will Matthews powered his way to a 2-yard touchdown run to open the second quarter to extend the Destrehan lead to 20-0.
Kohen Granier, who also saw action at quarterback for the Wildcats, contributed to the next score on a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jon Barrow. Like Darensbourg, Granier also had a hot hand, hooking up with John Williams on an 8-yard touchdown to keep the scoring parade going for Destrehan. Granier would add a touchdown run in the second half.
Darensbourg’s third touchdown of the contest – a 23-yard run – gave Destrehan a 41-0 lead going to the locker room.
Destrehan scored twice more in the second half on a 68-yard pass from Darensbourg to Tramaine Armstrong in the third quarter and a 4-yard run by Granier in the fourth period.
