East St. John scored on its first possession of the game and held on to take a 15-14 win Friday night at Scotlandville.
The Wildcats (1-1) marched 62 yards on its opening possession of the game, capping the drive on an 8-yard touchdown run by Xavier Lewis. Jarred Jackson scored on a two-point conversion pass off of a fake extra-point kick to give East St. John an 8-0 lead.
A blocked punt gave Scotlandville the ball at the East St. John 20-yard line to set up a 6-yard run by Delmas Holmes to inch to within 8-6.
Miscues continued for the Wildcats in the second quarter as a fumble and two interceptions gave the ball to the Hornets but they were unable to take advantage as the East St. John defense kept Scotlandville out of the end zone to preserve ESJ’s two-point edge at halftime.
Lewis suffered a mild shoulder injury in the second quarter and was unable to play quarterback the remainder of the game. Running back Nigel Anderson took over at quarterback while Lewis remained in the contest as a running back and receiver on offense while playing in the defensive secondary.
Anderson, who topped 100 yards rushing in the game, scored on a 7-yard run in the fourth quarter to increased East St. John’s lead to 15-6.
Scotlandville answered with a 7-yard run by quarterback Levis Lewis and a two-point conversion to make the score 15-14 in the closing seconds.
The Wildcats recovered an onside kick with less than 30 seconds left in the game to preserve the one-point triumph.
