File photosThe East St. John Wildcats opened the 2017 season with a 35-13 road loss Friday night to the Plaquemine Green Devils.

Whenever East St. John put itself back in the ball game, the Wildcats committed a mistake moments later that cost them dearly in a 35-13 season-opening loss Friday night in Plaquemine.

Trailing 14-0, East St. John put itself right back in the contest on 10-yard touchdown pass from Dasmain Crosby to Keith Matt.

The Wildcats found themselves down again by 14 points seconds later when Plaquemine’s Wayne Toussant returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and a 21-7 Green Devils advantage.

“We are right back in it and then we turn around and we try to kick away from Toussant but it ended up in his hands and we missed five or six tackles and he took it to the house,” East St. John coach Alden Foster lamented.

With 4:26 left in the third quarter, Crosby tossed to Cameron Grant, who broke a pair of tackles on his way to a 45-yard touchdown that made the score 21-13, but again disaster struck for the Wildcats.

“We came out and cut it to 21-13 and we get it and we are driving and we are on the plus side of the field. We scramble and throw it across the body and they picked it and they ended up scoring on that drive. It just changed momentum because we are driving,” said Foster.

Leading 28-13, the Green Devils added a touchdown in the closing moments of the game.

“They were trying to just get a first down with 1:50 left and they end up running the quarterback sneak and popping it out to make it 35-18,” Foster said.

Chances – those allowed and others not taken advantage of – helped drop the Wildcats to 0-1 on the season.

“We had one or two dropped interceptions that could have turned the game. When you face a good football team you can’t keep not taking advantage of opportunities and give them opportunities,” Foster said.
