This time, St. Amant’s K.J. Franklin didn’t drop the ball.
A week after Franklin fumbled in double-overtime to hand the Gators a loss to Lutcher, he bounced back in a big way against St. James Parish’s other high school by rushing for more than 200 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-21 win over the St. James Wildcats on Friday night at The Pit in St. Amant.
Looking for a quick start, St. James coach Robert Valdez failed to get it from his Wildcats, falling behind 10-0.
A 25-yard field goal by Matthew Parker and an 18-yard touchdown run by Franklin gave St. Amant (4-1) its 10-0 lead after one quarter.
St. James (3-2) answered when Sean Lebeouf scored on an 8-yard run to cap a 10-yard drive to pull the Wildcats to within three points at 10-7.
The Wildcats took their only lead of the game when St. James defensive back Brad Batiste raced 75 yards with an interception to put SJH on top 14-10 at halftime.
A 14-yard run by Franklin put the Gators back on top at 17-14.
St. Amant quarterback Lathan Bourgeois followed that up with a 5-yard touchdown run to stretch the Gators’ advantage to 24-14.
Shamar Smith, the Wildcats’ quarterback and kick returner, raced 99 yards with a kickoff return for a touchdown to cut the gap to 24-21 but it would prove to be the final points for St. James.
Smith provided most of the offense for a St. James unit that managed slightly more than 100 total yards as the Gator defense forced three fumbles and sacked the Wildcat quarterback five times.
