Like much of the season, things weren’t easy for the Hahnville Tigers in their District 7-5A encounter on Friday night against Central Lafourche in Mathews.

After allowing two scores in the opening quarter, the Tigers stormed back with 24 unanswered points to take home a 24-14 victory.

Hahnville (4-5 overall and 2-3 in district) entered the game holding the No. 30 power rating in Class 5A. A loss likely could have knocked the Tigers out of playoff contention.

Meanwhile, Hahnville delivered a blow to the Trojans. Central Lafourche (5-4 overall, 1-4 in district) entered the game holding the No. 18 seed and with win in the final two games could have put the Trojans into position to hold an opening-round playoff game.

The Trojans’ first score of the game came at the 10:15 mark of the first quarter when Deon Jenkins punched in a 12-yard run for a 7-0 lead. It was just one of Jenkins’ 22 rushing attempts in the game as he would total 80 yards on the ground as the game’s leading rusher.

The next strike for the Trojans came through the air when Jacob Butler found Logan Wilcox for a 6-yard score and a 14-0 lead for Central Lafourche with 2:09 remaining in the first quarter.

“We were down 14-0 early before you could blink an eye, and our kids were able to come back,” Hahnville coach Nick Saltaformaggio said. “We were able to settle down and make plays offensively.”

It was running back Brandon Comardelle who made one of the plays for the Tiger offense when he broke free for a 36-yard score, but a missed extra point only cut the deficit to 14-6.

The Tigers found the scoreboard again just before heading into the break with Ethan Chacon’s 21-yard field goal to make the game 14-9 in favor of the Trojans.

Coming slightly over a minute apart in the third quarter, the next two scores for the Tigers would seal the victory.

The first was another rushing score by Comardelle from near the goal line, as he punched in a 3-yard run for his second score of the game and the Tiger lead.

The two scores were part of his night that saw Comardelle rush for 38 yards on 10 carries.

At the 2:01 mark of the third quarter, it was the Tiger defense that came up big.

On the following possession, junior defensive lineman Logan Brimmer returned a fumble for a 10-yard score and finalized the score at 24-14 for the Tigers.

With this win, the Tigers will have a chance to finish the season at the .500 mark if they can take home a win next week against district opponent H.L. Bourgeois.
