Shelvin Keller rushed for three touchdowns as East St. John picked up its first win of the season with a 33-14 victory over visiting West Jefferson.
“Offensively, we just wanted to come out and establish the run. We ran the ball and got a few big plays early to (receiver) Javon Antonio,” East St. John coach Alden Foster said.
After falling behind 6-0, East St. John tied the game on an 11-yard run by Keller at the 3:12 mark of the first quarter.
East St. John’s defense forced quick three-and-out, setting up a go-ahead touchdown run of 15 yards by Keller for a 12-6 Wildcats advantage.
“Defense played lights out all night. We only gave up two big plays,” Foster said.
East St. John (1-1) made it 18-6 at halftime when quarterback Dasmain Crosby connected with Cameron Grant for a 6-yard touchdown pass with 1:02 left in the second quarter.
West Jefferson (0-2) rallied to within four points with a touchdown and two-point conversion to make it 18-14 at the 5:46 mark of the third quarter but that was as close as the Buccaneers would get.
Shortly after West Jeff its deficit to four points, East St. John sophomore defensive back Howard Joseph returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown. Calvin Gardner’s two-point conversion run made it 26-14 with 3:44 remaining in the third quarter.
The Wildcats rounded out the scoring with 7:33 left in the game on Keller’s third touchdown run to cap a long drive. His 17-yard effort, plus Oreb Sanchez’s successful extra point, accounted for the 33-14 final.
