File photosLutcher coach Dwain Jenkins saw his Bulldogs move above the .500 mark with a 34-6 victory over the East Ascension Spartans on Friday night in Gonzales.

A shut-down defense and three Rondell Mealey touchdowns propelled Lutcher to a 34-6 road win at Dutchtown on Friday night.

Lutcher’s defense didn’t allow a score and held Dutchtown to less than 200 yards of total offense.

“I think it was the most complete game our defense has played all year,” Lutcher coach Dwain Jenkins said. “We really did a great job of tackling and being able to keep the pressure on Dutchtown and stay out of some third-and-short situations. I thought we played really composed defensively. We didn’t give them any free first downs or extend drives for them and that’s something we had problems at times throughout the year.”

An 8-yard Mealey touchdown on Lutcher’s first possession gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.

A 5-yard touchdown run by Bulldogs quarterback Kolby Bourgeois extended Lutcher’s lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter.

Bourgeois hooked up with Mealey on a 26-yard touchdown pass to make the score 21-0.

With six seconds left in the opening half, Lutcher’s Chris Burkhalter blocked a Griffins punt and defensive back Ivan Clark scooped up the ball and scored to give the Bulldogs a 28-0 lead at the break.

Lutcher (3-2) was driving early in the third quarter when Dutchtown (3-2) came up with its only score of the game when Griffins defensive back Jordan Jackson intercepted a pass in the end zone and raced 100 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-6.

Mealy added another touchdown run to account for the final margin.

Lutcher won the contest decisively in a game that saw both teams combine for more than 200 yards in penalties.

“We had so many penalties offensively, we didn’t get into a rhythm. We overcame it on that last drive right before the half. We overcame some penalties and Cam Amato had a big third-down catch before the Bourgeois to Mealey touchdown pass to score right before the half,” Jenkins said.
