New Riverside Academy head football coach Kevin Dizer has finalized coaching assignments for his staff.

Two new hires include Kerry Watkins and Andre Washington.

Watkins, the new receivers coach, is an East St. John alum who went on to play for Georgia Tech and in the Canadian Football League.

“I think that’s a big-time hire for us,” Dizer said of Watkins. “He’s a guy that’s a well-known name in our community. He obviously has a lot of football experience and he will be real good for our kids. I think that was a real home run for us.”

Washington, the new running backs coach, is a former player and coach at John Curtis.

“Andre played as a receiver at John Curtis and signed with Penn State and played for Joe Paterno. He’s been helping out at Curtis for the past 15 years,” Dizer said of Washington.

Shane Bohrer returns as the Rebels’ offensive coordinator.

“Coach Shane had a lot of opportunities to go other places. He was at the top of the list of guys to retain. He’s been the OC for the past four years and done some really good things and I was real humbled that he would want to stay,” said Dizer.

Jonathan Reed, who is no stranger to Dizer, has been promoted to defensive coordinator.

“He and I played college football together at Belhaven and we coached together at Belhaven for three years. He and I have been together for 10 years as either players or coaches. He’s a guy I think highly of and I think he will bring a lot to the table. He’s another guy who has chances to go other places,” Dizer said.

Joe Trosclair remains as Riverside’s offensive line coach.

“It was real important to keep him. He’s a Riverside alum. He’s been coaching here for close to 10 years or more and he’s done a really good job with the offensive line,” Dizer said of Trosclair.

Another holdover, Ryan Zeller, has moved over to coach the offensive line as well.

“Ryan Zeller was an offensive tackle at Nicholls State. Last year he coached defense for us but I don’t think that was the best fit for him. He’s clearly more comfortable working with the offensive line. For him to be able to give Coach Joe help that’s he’s never had before, I think that will be a real advantage for us,” Dizer said.

Jeff Leeseman will coach the Rebel linebackers.

“Jeff Leeseman came around last year and helped us out with our middle school program. We were real impressed with Jeff. He really doesn’t have a lot of coaching experience. That’s OK. Anybody can learn that but he’s a real good guy to have around the kids and I think Jeff is real excited to get his first fulltime job coaching varsity football,” Dizer said.
