Kevin Dizer did not sugarcoat Riverside Academy’s 41-14 loss to visiting Newman on Friday night in District 9-2A action.

“We got our butts kicked tonight. Ain’t no two ways about it. No excuses, no nothing. Newman came in. They were the aggressor and they kicked our butts. Period,” Dizer said.

The Rebels (1-5 overall, 1-1 in district) went into the game coming off their first win of the season 47-14 over South Plaquemines a week ago. Newman (6-1 overall, 1-1 in district) was reeling after allowing a 31-14 lead through three quarters slip away in a 35-31 loss to Country Day.

Newman responded with four touchdown passes from quarterback Martin Butcher to crush the Rebels.

“I was interested to see how that matchup was going to go. Newman has a good receiving corps and our secondary had been playing well coming into it. It was kind of good on good but Newman showed they were better in terms of their pass offense versus our pass defense,” Dizer said.

The Greenies scored on their opening drive on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Butcher to Jamone Sutherland. Sutherland proved to be Butcher’s favorite target, hauling in 11 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns.

Riverside countered with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Gage Larvadain to Tairyn Lockhart to the game 7-7.

Newman regained the lead on a 1-yard run by Liam Rowan.

The Greenies were successful on an onside kick, getting the ball right back at the Riverside 25. Butcher, who passed for more than 250 yards, hooked up again with Sutherland to give Newman a 21-7 lead with slightly less than two minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

“The onside kick was big for them. They were able to steal a possession and make that count,” said Dizer.

Newman went on to lead 27-14 at halftime.

Butcher’s lone touchdown toss not to Sutherland went to John Charbonnet.

Rowan added a second touchdown and Will Hardie connected on a 35-yard field goal for the Greenies.
