West St. John was unable to stop Newman quarterback Miles Lapayre in a 28-14 home loss in District 12-2A action Friday night to close out the regular season.
Lapeyre, who was 10 of 15 passing for 148 yards, tossed four touchdowns in the game. He connected twice each with receivers Storey Charbonnet and Dylon Hill.
Newman (5-4 overall, 2-3 in district) came up with the game’s only score in the first quarter when Lapeyre tossed 7 yards to Hill in the back left corner of the end zone for a 7-0 Greenies lead at the 4:40 mark of the opening quarter.
A pair of touchdown passes from Lapeyre to Charbonnet gave Newman a 21-0 halftime lead. Lapeyre’s first scoring toss to Charbonnet in the second quarter was from 16 yards out and the duo connected on a 9-yard touchdown.
The Greenies scored first in the second half on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Lapeyre to Hill for a 28-0 lead at the 9:03 mark of the third quarter.
West St. John (3-7 overall, 1-4 in district) scored in each of the third and fourth quarters.
The Rams’ first touchdown of the night came on a 73-yard pass from D’Andre Gaudia to Marcus Boudoin at the 7:58 mark of the third quarter.
West St. John rounded out the scoring on a 63-pass pass from Gaudia to Jamal Walters with 4:42 left in the game for the 28-14 final.
Newman was more than just Lapeyre and the passing game. Running back James Poche rushed for 160 yards on 27 carries.
Gaudia finished 6 of 11 passing for 206 yards while Walters ended with five receptions for 122 yards and Austin Alexander rushed for 50 yards on 12 attempts.
