It has been no coincidence that the pipeline of River Parish football talent to Nicholls State has been flourishing over the past few years.
Since being named the Colonels head coach in 2015, Tim Rebowe, a Norco native, Destrehan grad, and former Destrehan head coach has regularly tapped into his talent-rich home base. This spring, eleven River Parish players are on the Nicholls roster.
Next week Rebowe is headed home again, but this time he won’t be there for a recruiting trip.
On Thursday, March 30th, the River Parish Colonel Athletic Association will hold a football fundraiser from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Cypress Lakes Country Club in Destrehan.
“We have a bunch of friends in the River Parishes with me being from there, they want to support the program,” said Rebowe. “It’s just friends of the program, it doesn’t have to be ex-players or former Nicholls people. We just want to get people there to help the (football) program. We recruit heavily in those areas and we just want to keep that pipeline going.”
Not only does the current Colonel roster display a quantity of River Parish players, but the quality is equally impressive.
Defensive tackle Sully Laiche (Lutcher) and linebacker Allen Pittman (Destrehan) were both named by Hero Sports as Football Championship Series 1st Team Freshman All-Americans last season.
Linebacker Evan Veron (Riverside) and defensive back Ahmani Martin (East St. John) who were both key contributors to the Colonels defense in 2016 are being held out of spring practice after respective surgeries. Both are expected to contribute heavily again in the fall.
Linebacker Aquindas Steib (St. James) is also ready to contribute as a redshirt freshman and has been running with the second-team unit during spring practice.
Wide receiver Arron McKenney (St. James) was singled out by Rebowe following Saturday’s spring practice for hustle and desire.
Other River Parish alum on the Nicholls roster include wide receivers Morrell Bartholomew (West St. John) and Darrion Cook (Riverside), defensive backs Ben St. Pierre (Lutcher) and Austin Dickerson (Destrehan), and running back Taj Smith (St. Charles).
Sid Candies, Mark Roussel, Callen Hotard, Gary Smith, Jimmy Delaneuville, Rusty Rebowe, Kelly Buckwalter, Mike Keiffer, Brock Anderson, and Robbie Leblanc are sponsoring the event.
