St. James scored on five of its first six possessions of the game on the Wildcats’ way to a 43-7 victory over Haynes Academy in District 10-3 action Thursday night at Joe Yenni Stadium in Metairie.

Wildcats quarterback Shamar Smith tossed four, first-half touchdown passes as St. James built a 36-0 lead on its way to the victory.

“We wanted to work on our passing game and we did that. Shamar had a good game. He was 8 of 11 for 190 yards and four touchdown passes,” St. James coach Robert Valdez said.

The Wildcats defense held Haynes to less than 100 yards of total offense.

“We limited what they wanted to do defensively. We played run defense very well,” Valdez said.

St. James (5-2 overall, 2-0 in district) got its first score of the game on a 19-yard pass from Smith to Shazz Preston.

A 17-yard toss from Smith to Jonathan Williams made it 16-0 after one quarter.

Smith was at it again the in the second quarter, tossing touchdown passes of 30 yards to Sean Lebeouf and 49 yards to Logan Gravois to make it 29-0.

The only non-passing touchdown of the first half came on a 19-yard run by Lebeouf to extend the Wildcats’ lead to 36-0 at halftime.

Following a scoreless third quarter, St. James rounded out it’s scoring on a 19-yard run by Lebeouf to make it 43-0.

Haynes (1-5 overall, 0-2 in district) avoided the shutout on a 13-yard touchdown pass by Yellow Jackets quarterback Zach Bott on the final play of the game.

The Wildcats face a much sterner test next week when they host De La Salle.

“You go from one extreme to another. Haynes didn’t really have a lot of size. De La Salle is huge and they can match your athleticism and speed,” Valdez said.
