File photosPhillip Banko led East St. John to the playoffs all four years he was coach at the school, which included the years dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac.

A source has informed RiverParishFootball.com that Phillip Banko is out as East St. John’s head football coach and athletic director.

The source informed RPF.com that Banko received a phone call Monday from East St. John High School coach Patricia Triche, who informed him that St. John Schools Superintendent Kevin George wanted to go in a different direction.

The source also informed RPF.com that the superintendent wants a replacement in place by the end of January.

Several attempts to reach Banko by phone for comment were unsuccessful.

For the past three years, East St. John has been conducting classes out of temporary buildings on the campus of Leon Godchaux Junior High School after severe flooding damage to the ESJ school building due to Hurricane Isaac.

Banko’s four-year record at East St. John was 28-20. He led the Wildcats to the playoffs all four years.

The Wildcats went 8-4 in Banko’s first season in 2011, defeating Brother Martin 35-3 in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs before losing 49-20 to Jesuit.

East St. John went 5-5 in 2012, losing 30-20 to Airline in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Wildcats were 7-5 in 2013, falling to Parkway 52-25 in the opening round of the playoffs.

East St. John is coming off a 6-6 season in 2014, defeating John Ehret 28-18 in the opening round of the playoffs before being eliminated by District 7-5A rival Destrehan 68-14.
