Lutcher pulled to within a touchdown late in the third quarter but could get no closer before East Ascension pulled away for a 48-30 victory in the season opener for both teams Friday night in Gonzales.

Trailing 31-24 the Bulldogs appeared to have picked off a pass that could have set Lutcher up for a potential game-tying touchdown, but the interception was overruled before East Ascension pulled away.

“One guy called an interception and another guy called it incomplete,” Lutcher coach Dwain Jenkins said. “They got together and ruled it incomplete and EA is a good football team and they went down and got points out of it and they were able to get us off the field and they scored one more time to put us away.”

An Alberto Ontiveros field goal extended the East Ascension lead to 10 points before the Spartans went on to add a pair of touchdowns for the final margin.Lutcher quarterback Kolby Bourgeois passed for topped 300 yards passing with four touchdowns, but the Bulldogs were held to minus-6 yards rushing.

“We kind of knew going into the game what their front was like and that running the ball was going to be tough against them,” Jenkins said. “We are very, very thin on the offensive line. We thought our best chance to win the game and move the football was to put the ball in Kolby Bourgeois’ hands and let our receivers make some plays. We did at times but a couple of drives that we stalled in the first half, we had some big drops.”

Bourgeois and East Ascension quarterback Jason Wakefield each threw three touchdown passes in the first half as the Spartans built a 31-21 lead at the break.

East Ascension led 31-14 before Lutcher scored on a 36-yard pass from Bourgeois to Cam Amato late in the second quarter to narrow the halftime deficit to 10 points.
