West St. John fell short in its quest for two-in-a-row road wins over upper classification teams after a 41-28 loss at Plaquemine on Friday night.

The loss, which evened the Rams’ record at 2-2, came one week after West St. John toppled Bonnabel 35-12.

The Rams simply were unable to stop Plaquemine running back Wayne Toussant. The Louisiana Tech commitment rushed for 107 yards and four touchdowns while also hauling in a touchdown reception.

West St. John struck first when a 34-yard pass from quarterback D’andre Gaudia to Trenton Grow stacked the Rams to a 6-0 lead.

Class 4A Plaquemine (3-1) countered with a 51-yard run quarterback Michael Sproles to set up a 5-yard touchdown run by running back Wayne Toussant to give the Green Devils a 7-6 edge.

The Green Devils struck for two more touchdowns on runs of 33 yards by Toussant and 18 yards by Sproles and to extend their lead to 21-6 after one quarter.

West St. John rallied with a touchdown of its own to make it 21-12 at the break. Tosses of 48 and 32 yards from Gaudia to Grow helped to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Niko Davis as the Rams trailed by nine at halftime.

The Rams picked up in the third quarter where they left off in the first half when defensive lineman Horace Lewis took the ball away from Sproles while he was trying to hand off and raced 28 yards for a touchdown to narrow the deficit to three points at 21-18.

A 27-yard touchdown pass from Sproles to Toussant, a Louisiana Tech commitment, later in the third quarter allowed the Green Devils to extend their lead to 27-18.

The Green Devils countered once more in the third quarter on a 4-yard run by Toussant for a 34-18 lead.

Gaudia and Grow hooked up once more, this time on a 39-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it 34-26.

After a 44-yard touchdown run by Toussant made it 44-26, the Rams came up with a late safety to account for the 44-28 final.
