Tran’s all-purpose effort leads Comets to 45-0 win over Lusher

Phillip Tran scored a total of four touchdowns and amassed 255 all-purpose yards as St. Charles Catholic defeated Lusher 45-0 in the District 10-3A opener at Brees Family Field on Friday night in New Orleans.

Touchdown runs of 2 an 30 yards by Tran staked the Comets to a 13-0 lead after one quarter.

St. Charles (5-1 overall, 1-0 in district) put the game away with a 24-point second quarter to lead 37-0 at halftime.

Tran’s third touchdown came on a 66-yard reception from quarterback Sutton Bourgeois for a 20-0 Comets lead early in the second quarter.

The sophomore running back’s final touchdown of the contest came on a 10-yard run to extend SCC’s lead to 27-0.

St. Charles Catholic added two quick scores in the final 41 seconds of the half.

Bourgeois tossed his second touchdown of the game on a 17-yard strike to tight end Randall Campbell with 41 seconds left and a Cameron Fabre connected on a 33-yard field with 11 seconds showing in the second quarter to give the Comet their commanding 37-0 halftime lead.

A punt return by Tran to inside the Lusher 10-yard line set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Joseph Chiarella to make it 43-0 early in the third quarter.

A snap through the end zone for a safety provided the final points of the game midway in the third quarter for the 45-0 final.

St. Charles finished with 266 yards of total offense, including 153 rushing and 113 passing as the Comets took advantage of three Lusher fumbles to play on a short field.

By contrast, the Comets’ defense held Lusher (3-3 overall, 0-1 in district) to 27 total yards, including 20 rushing and seven passing. Lions quarterbacks Arnold Little and Sam Kates lost a combined 37 yards

St. Charles Catholic’s passing game showed signs of life as Bourgeois was 5 of 5 passing for 105 yards and two touchdowns while Justin Dumas was 1 of 2 for eight yards.
