West St. John's Brandon Walters (L) is presented the RPF Coach of the Year trophy by former Rams coach Laury Dupont (R) of the Sports Medicine Center of Thibodaux Regional.

After leading West St. John to the school's first State Championship since 2004, West St. John's Brandon Walters has been named the 2017 Riverparishfootball.com Coach of the Year.

"It's truly an honor I'm flattered by it, I'm humbled by it," said Walters. "Its just a testament that the staff has put in along with the players this year. We look forward to better things and higher height. I just hope along the way that we were able to build some bonds with some of our kids and our staff. Along that way also I hope we found some things inside ourselves as far as doing things the right way; Chopping at the wood, and doing things the right way."

In one of the best matches to date, the trophy was presented by Laury Dupont of the Sports Medicine Center of Thibodaux Regional, but also an LHSAA Hall-of-Fame Coach who spent 21 years at West St. John leading the Rams to three 2A State Championships (1998, 2003, 2004).

I'm very pleased an honored to give this trophy to Coach Walters. "  With (Coach Walters) following in the footsteps of me and Coach (Robert) Valdez, it's a great honor. And winning the state championship was a great honor for West St. John.

Dupont now is a marketing liaison for the Sports Medicine Center of Thibodaux Regional who has been a major sponsor for Riverparishfootball.com since 2013.

"It's about servicing our communities and our regions," said Dupont. "(The Sports Medicine Center of Thibodaux Regional) has branched out into six parishes and it's about keeping our players safely in the game."

After opening the season at 2-2, the Rams finished with a flurry winning their final 10 games to close out the magic season with a 12-2 record.

The 1A State Championship wrapped up Walters third year at the helm of the Rams after serving as an assistant to both Dupont and Robert Valdez. Walters begin his career as a head coach with a 12-6 win over rival St. James in the Railroad Classic in 2015.

"It's always good to win your first game, but it's even better to win your last," said Walters.
