Members of the 2017 West St. John 1A State Championship team will be announcing the New Orleans Saints 6th Round pick Saturday in the NFL Draft.

"And with the 189th pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints select..."

Getting to make an announcement like that in any round of the NFL Draft is an honor. Tomorrow at the Saints team headquarters on Airline Drive in Metairie, that's exactly what the seniors on the West St. John football team, head coach Brandon Walters, and his coaching staff will be doing for the Saints sixth round pick.

Walters was named the Riverparishfootball.com Coach of the Year and was the New Orleans Saints recipient of the Don Shula NFL Coach of the Year after leading the Rams to the 1A State Championship in December, the school's first state title since 2004.

"It's big for West St John and the whole WSJ family," said Brandon Walters. "There are so many die-hard Saints fans just within that school and around the community. It's just exciting for the kids, for the school, and for the opportunity to yet again put West St. John on the map. To be nationally televised doing something like this is just great."

It's all part of the NFL's Play Football Program-themed to celebrate youth and high school football participants across the country. Youth football players from NFL FLAG and local youth and high school football have been selected by NFL Clubs to announce Round 6 picks from various locations throughout the country. And for the Saints, that will be handled by West St. John.

"I've been around football since I was 9-years-old and I can remember us wearing the long socks with the stripes and for awhile I thought I was Walter Payton running the ball on Saturday mornings playing tackle on the levee," said Walters. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing and it's really special for me and my family and my other family being the coaching staff, the kids and the school."

For the West St. John seniors who will be participating in the selection, it will only be part of an eventful day. Saturday night is the school's prom.

"They have a lot on their hands," said Walters."They're wondering if they have to stay the whole time if it runs long because I'm shocked to hear some of them have hair appointments and stuff like that. Those guys are pretty pumped. This is just another feather to add to their cap. They will remember this for the rest of their lives, its just another opportunity for them to be recognized and put West St. John on the forefront."

The Saints 6th round pick is scheduled to be the 189th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Here's hoping the Saints don't trade down in the sixth round. The West St. John prom awaits.
