Jontre Kirklin passed for four touchdowns and rushed for another as Lutcher dominated Sci Academy 57-0 in District 9-3A action Friday night at Joe Brown Park in New Orleans.
“You just want to get off to a good start and not give the opponent anything to get excited about. You want to handle your business and execute at a high level. That’s what your goals have to be in a game like that,” Lutcher coach Dwain Jenkins said.
The Bulldogs (7-1 overall, 5-0 in district) certain did that, running out to a 51-0 lead by halftime over Sci Academy (3-5 overall, 2-3 in district).
“We came out and played the way that we should play. Six of the seven possessions we had the first half, we scored. We had a safety on special teams after the first possession that Sci had the ball and Ethan Bland returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown on the last play of the first half,” Jenkins said.
Between the special teams and defensive score, it was all Kirklin and the Lutcher offense.
Kirklin tossed touchdown passes to Gregory Clayton of 9 and 14 yards at the opening safety to give the Bulldogs, the second-ranked team in Class 3A, a 16-0 lead.
Kirklin’s lone touchdown run came at the start of the second quarter for a 23-0 Lutcher advantage.
Following a 3-yard scoring run by Daevon Adams, Kirklin spread the ball around. A 65-yard touchdown pass to Al’Dontre Davis and a 1-yard toss to Tariq Belvin made it 44-0.
Bland’s interception return allowed Lutcher to top 50 points by halftime.
Using a running clock throughout the second half, the only score over the final two quarters came on an 8-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Kolby Bourgeois.
Kirklin finished 12 of 18 passing for 195 yards and four touchdowns.
Four Lutcher running backs topped 30 yards rushing, with Adams leading the way with 44 yards on seven carries.
Davis had five catches for 134 yards.
