By the time the season’s over, John Emery may run all the way to Athens, Georgia.
Emery, the Georgia Bulldog commitment, rushed for 222 yards and three touchdowns as the Destrehan Wildcats opened the 2018 season with a 41-15 road win at Slidell.
Slidell (0-1) held early leads of 8-0 and 15-7 before the Wildcats pulled away.
A 69-yard pass from Slidell quarterback Jacob Guidry to Harlan Dixon and a two-point conversion run by Guidry gave the Tigers the lead.
Destrehan (1-0) countered on a 55-yard touchdown run. The Wildcats went conventional on the conversion as Mike Ehrmann kicked the extra point to pull to with 8-7.
The game opened as if the teams might trade scores all night when Guidry hooked up with Brandyn Spann on a 12-yard touchdown pass to build the Slidell lead to 15-7.
When J.R. Blood tossed to Joe Washington for a 12-yard touchdown pass, the Wildcats again pulled to within a point, this time at 15-14.
It would be the last time the teams would trade scores as Destrehan went on to score the final 34 points of the game.
Destrehan’s first lead of the game came with less than two minutes remaining before halftime on a quarterback sneak by Blood and Ehrmann’s conversion that put the Wildcats on top 21-15. The score was set up by a Champ Craven interception of a Guidry pass.
The Wildcats put the game out of reach by scoring on their first three possession of the third quarter.
Emery had touchdown runs of 13 and 41 yards while Blood and Washington connected once again – this time on a 34-yard strike.
The Wildcats amassed almost 400 yards of total offense.
