Powered by 157 yards rushing and three touchdowns from John Emery, Destrehan made sure there would be no upset this year against St. Charles as the Wildcats rolled to a 31-3 win Friday night.
“It was nothing about revenge, it was about coming in here and playing a good football team,” said Destrehan coach Stephen Robicheaux. “(St. Charles) Coach (Frank) Monica is the best in the business. He always has his kids prepared. We knew what we were facing tonight and we knew we had to come out and play well, and for the most part I think we did.”
After a scoreless opening quarter, Destrehan struck first when J.R. Blood connected with Quinton Torbor who turned a short pass into a 51-yard touchdown reception when he blazed down the home sideline for the score. Late in the first half, Emery scored his first touchdown from nine yards out and Destrehan led 14-0 at the half.
Emery added touchdown runs of 61 and 24 yards in the second half as the Wildcats puled away for the second consecutive convincing win to open the season.
“I thought our defensive front did a tremendous job of controlling the line of scrimmage,” said Robicheaux. “Once we finally got it going and the running game started to gel a little bit I think we just got them a little bit tired out and we ended up making some big plays.”
Emery had plenty of company in the Destrehan running game. Kyle Edwards rushed for 55 yards on 10 carries while Blood added 37 yards on 6 carries, while going 9-16, 134 yards passing and a touchdown.
The Comets led by Bryce Authement in the secondary and Mason Narcisse up front, played an overall solid game defensively. The discrepancy was in the offense where Destrehan out gained the Comets 392-156 in total yards.
The Comets junior quarterback Justin Dumas was 6-19 with 75 yards passing while running back Joe Chiarella finished with 75 yards, 13-44 rushing and 1-31 receiving.
The Wildcats (2-0) have their first road test next week as they face their former defensive coordinator Marcus Scott who is now the Head Coach at John Ehret.
St. Charles (1-1) will host Wilkinson County.
