Three different backs combined for five rushing touchdowns as St. Charles Catholic defeated the visiting St. Louis Saints 42-10 in the Division II quarterfinals Friday night in Laplace.
The win advances St. Charles, the No. 3 seed, to the semifinals next week at University High. U-High, the No. 2 seed, eliminated No. 7 seed Teurlings Catholic 35-9.
The St. Charles offense managed to rush for 280 yards and took advantage of excellent field position provided by the Comets’ defense. A 13-yard run by Joe Chiarella gave St. Charles a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
The Comets (9-2) made it 14-0 with 16 seconds left in the opening quarter on a 4-yard run by Narquez Jones.
St. Louis (4-8) was forced to punt from deep in its own territory early in the second quarter. The Saints’ punter mishandled the snap from center and was tackled at the St. Louis 20. Jones eventually scored on another 4-yard run to put the Comets on top 21-0.
The Saints used up 6:02 of the clock in reaching the St. Charles 11-yard line but came away with no points when Comets defender Trey Joseph intercepted a pass at the 2-yard line and raced to the SCC 48.
In the game’s only non-rushing touchdown, St. Charles quarterback Lloyd Nash connected with Darrin Blystad on a 13-yard toss with five seconds left before halftime to extend the Comets’ lead to 28-0.
St. Charles mounted an 80-yard run to open the second half, culminating on a 6-yard run by Phillip Tran to make it 35-0.
St. Louis’ only touchdown came with 1:35 left in the third quarter when Jaleel Goodwin scored on a 3-yard run to cap an 11-play, 75-yard drive.
The Comets answered on the ensuing drive on a 12-yard touchdown run by Chiarella.
