Riverside Academy built a 25-14 halftime lead before Thibodaux scored 22-straight points in the second half to take a 36-25 lead on the way to a 43-31 win for the Tigers in the 2019 season opener Friday in Thibodaux.
“Being a Class 1A school I’m proud of the guys for coming out and competing against a Class 5A school,” said Riverside coach Kevin Dizer.
The Thibodaux rally began on the Tigers’ opening possession of the second half with an 8-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Alleman to Kyren Lacy.
Touchdown runs by Rimond Thompson of 13 and 7 yards on Thibodaux’s next two possessions put the Tigers on top 36-25.
Riverside answered when Ahmonte Watkins scampered 72 yards for a touchdown as the Rebels rallied to within 36-31.
Interceptions of Gage Larvadain passes by Josh Holden and Tyren Young ended Riverside’s next two drives before the Tigers put the game away with slightly more than two minutes left in the fourth quarter on a 96-yard touchdown run by Thompson.
After a Maurquel Price touchdown gave Thibodaux and early lead, the Rebels immediately answered when Watkins returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown.
A 19-yard pass from Larvadain to Herbert Keys put the Rebels on top 13-7 early in the second quarter.
After a 4-yard run by Feronte Miller put the Tigers back on top at 14-13, Keys returned an errant Alleman pass 65 yards for a touchdown with less than one minute remaining in the second quarter.
Thibodaux attempted a 19-yard field goal to close the first half but the kick was blocked with Cade Middleton returning it 80 yards for a touchdown to extend the Rebels’ halftime lead to 25-14.
