Hahnville overcame a second-half Ponchatoula run but held on for a 59-49 road win in the second round of the Class 5A boys’ basketball playoffs Tuesday.
In other playoff action involving River Parish team Tuesday, West St. John lost 52-50 at Oak Grove while Lutcher was eliminated by visiting St. Martinville 60-42.
Hahnville, the No. 10 seed, will travel to take on Ouachita Parish, the No. 2 seed, in the quarterfinal round. Ouachita Parish defeated No. 15 seed Southwood 54-43.
A 17-2 scoring spree by Ponchatoula erased what once had been an 11-point lead for Hahnville before the Tigers regrouped.
After Hahnville (25-9) reestablished the lead, Claudell Harris knocked down a 3-pointer to stretch the Tigers’ lead back to five points at 49-44 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the game.
A seven-point lead by Hahnville was cut down to two points with slightly less than a minute remaining in the game. Dylan Lorio hit two free throws and the Tigers never looked back from that point.
Harris led Hahnville with 17 points. Kaden Pierre chipped in 12 for the Tigers and Lorio 10.
Oak Grove 52, West St. John 50: A Rams turnover in a tie game with 12 seconds remaining led to a fast-break basket by Oak Grove’s Taevon Anderson that eliminated West St. John from the Class 1A playoffs with their two-point loss at Oak Grove.
“The kids are taking it pretty hard but they handled everything well as far as us preparing and traveling. I thought they did everything they needed to do,” said West St. John coach Alton Joseph.
In a close game throughout, West St. John (12-19) trailed by two points after one quarter and the Rams held a 27-26 halftime lead.
Jerrod Jessie led West St. John with 15 points and Tyray Bartholomew added 10.
“Trenton Grow did a great job of defending their best guy,” Joseph noted.
West St. John opened the playoffs with a 64-57 win over Delta Charter, the first time the Rams won an opening-round playoff game in almost a decade.
“To accomplish that and to then go on the road and compete with the No. 5 team, that was big,” said Joseph.
St. Martinville 60, Lutcher 42: Being outscored by 10 points by visiting St. Martinville doomed the Bulldogs in their second-round Class 3A playoff game Tuesday.
Trailing 12-7 after one quarter, Lutcher rallied to within a point of St. Martinville at 19-18 at halftime.
Lutcher was outscored 20-10 in the third quarter to trail 39-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
Jacoby Williams and D’Wayne Winfield each scored 10 points to pace Lutcher.
Datayvious Gabriel and Harvey Broussard scored 15 points apiece for St. Martinville, while Jalen Mitchell chipped in 14.
