A potential state championship rematch in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs looms for Hahnville.
That would be the scenario if the Lady Tigers, the No. 12 seed, win their postseason opener against No. 21 Comeaux. Should Hahnville win and Ouachita Parish, the No. 5 seed, defeat New Iberia, the No. 28 seed, in its opening-round contest, the rematch would take place in Monroe.
Hahnville coach Jerry Nugent cautions the Lady Tigers faithful to not get ahead of themselves.
“Like I told our players, people are expecting a rematch of last year’s championship in round two both of us have to handle our business to get that opportunity. We are focusing on Comeaux,” Nugent said.
While Comeaux may be the No. 21 seed, it’s a well-tested team, according to Nugent.
“They play in what I think is one of the toughest districts in the state,” said Nugent. “When you are playing Sulphur twice a year, Sam Houston twice a year, Acadiana, Lafayette, that’s a tough gauntlet. It will automatically make them tough.”
Hahnville and Ouachita Parish have faced each other twice in the 2019 regular season. Ouachita Parish won 7-4 in the first meeting in March and Hahnville followed with a 13-7 triumph a week later.
“Any time you’ve actually done it, it helps. As a coach, it’s a catch-22. I think what benefits us is I think having lost to them and beaten them helps us. Beating a team allows you to have that confidence that you can beat them, but you don’t want to take for granted that if we beat them before, we can beat them again,” Nugent said.
