There shouldn’t be any unexpected hops for either Lutcher or St. James when the two teams meet Saturday afternoon in Lutcher.
The Wildcats may not know the baseball field as well as the Bulldogs but with St. James having played three “home” games at the park because its facility at the new school in Vacherie is still under construction, there won’t be any unknowns.
“I guess it helps out a little bit but you still have to throw strikes, you still have to hit the ball and field the ball. But I guess we do have a little idea of the fences and sort of stuff,” said St. James coach Louis Guillot.
“Maybe a little bit,” Lutcher coach Davey Clement said of the Bulldogs losing their home-field advantage.
The game is slated for 1 p.m. in Lutcher and will be live streamed by VSNLouisiana. Calling the action will be Drew Robison.
St. James is 14-8 during a season when the Wildcats had to play all of their games on the road.
“It’s been tough,” Guillot said. “You have to keep the kids focused, especially at practice with track going on and everybody running around. You have to focus on road trips, busses, getting them out of class and having to catch up with work. Credit to the kids that we have. They stuck together and they are working their tails off.”
Clement said Lutcher was more than willing to help out its St. James Parish rival.
“Me and Coach Guillot have a good relationship and when I found out they needed to use our field to play a couple of district games, I didn’t have any problems with it. I just can’t wait to play them,” said Clement.
Saturday’s game is a non-district affair. The teams will be league foes again starting next year when Lutcher drops down to Class 3A.
“I like playing against quality teams when we are not playing in the district. I know Coach Guillot is doing a good job and I know he will have them ready,” said Clement, whose team is 14-14 on the season.
“This is the home stretch before the playoffs and we will be seeing a team like we will be seeing in the playoffs. We are looking forward to the competition,” Guillot said.
The Bulldogs are expected to have Kolby Bourgeois on the mound against St. James.
“Kolby’s had a good year for us, not just as a pitcher, but is our leadoff hitter and is a good hitter, also. He had little bit of arm trouble in the middle of the year but before that, he looked like one of our top pitchers,” said Clement.
The St. James starter is yet to be determined since the game against Lutcher will be the Wildcats’ fourth game in a week due to makeup games from previous rainouts.
