Kayon Brumfield, a sophomore defensive back from Riverside Academy, remains in a Baton Rouge hospital where he was airlifted from the field of Southern University’s Mumford Stadium after sustaining an injury in the Rebels’ 47-34 loss Thursday to Southern Lab.
“He remains in hospital for precautionary reasons. He probably will be released today. He was airlifted to the hospital. It seems he will be OK. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers until we know more,” Riverside coach Kevin Dizer said.
The injury occurred after Brumfield made a tackle early in the fourth quarter.
“We all know what we are dealing with. The players, I don’t think they quite realize some of the stuff that can go wrong and everything it does put everything into perspective and it opens the eyes to everyone to never take things for granted,” said Dizer.
Riverside (1-5) built its lead in the first quarter on 65-yard run by Chamar Jackson and a 6-yard rushing touchdown by Gage Larvadain.

Southern Lab inched to within a point at 14-13 early in the second quarter on a 79-yard touchdown pass by Angelo Izzard.
A 37-yard touchdown reception by Daelon Hardy midway in the second quarter put the Kittens on top 19-14.
The Rebels regained the lead at 20-19 on a 24-yard pass from Larvadain to Ahmonte Watkins.
A 45-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion allowed Southern Lab to take a 27-20 lead at halftime.
After a rushing touchdown by Southern Lab to extend the Kittens’ lead, Riverside countered with a 6-yard touchdown run by Luke Hymel and Nick Washington’s two-point conversion to pull the Rebels to within 34-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
Brumfield’s injury occurred with 11:45 left in the fourth quarter and the game was delayed for approximately 45 minutes.
After play resumed, Southern Lab extended its lead on a 15-yard touchdown run by Lutrell Pruitt to make it 40-28.
Riverside was on the march moments later but failed to score when the Kittens intercepted a Rebels pass at the Southern Lab 25-yard line.
The Rebels finally managed to cut into Southern Lab’s lead on a 6-yard touchdown run by Hymel and two-point conversion, making the score 34-28.
Touchdown runs of 15 and 6 yards by Pruitt extended Southern Lab’s lead to 47-28 in the fourth quarter, Riverside rounded out the scoring on a touchdown reception by Larvadain with less than a minute remaining in the game to account for the 47-34 final.
