Riverside Academy’s inability to stop the run all season long was never more in evidence in the Rebels’ 45-28 loss to De La Salle on Friday night at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans that dropped RA to 0-4 on the season.
De La Salle running back Montrell Johnson rushed for more than 300 yards and five touchdowns to pace the Cavaliers.
Riverside trailed only 24-21 early in the third quarter when Rebels quarterback Gage Larvadain hooked up with Jaylen Watkins on a 34-yard touchdown pass.
Johnson responded by scoring the next three touchdowns. Scoring runs of 75, 32 and 38 yards allowed the Cavaliers (3-2) to pull away with a 45-21 lead after three quarters.
The only score of fourth quarter came on a 22-yard pass from Larvadain to Nick Washington to account for the final margin.
While Johnson was running all over the field, Riverside managed to get its yards though the air. Larvadain threw for slightly less than 300 yards and three touchdowns.
A 31-yard Blake Giacone field goal gave De La Salle a quick 3-0 lead in the opening quarter.
Riverside gained its first lead of the game when the Rebels countered moments later on a 40-yard touchdown run by Louis Cheneau.
Johnson’s first touchdown of the night – from 15 yards out – gave the Cavaliers a 10-7 lead after one quarter.
The teams traded leads again when Larvadain tossed 4 yards to Kash Foley to put Riverside on top 14-10 less than a minute into the second quarter.
It would prove to be Riverside’s last lead of the night.
An 8-yard run by De’ante Lebranch put the Cavaliers the lead for good at 17-14. A 1-yard touchdown by Johnson only seconds before halftime extended De La Salle’s lead to 24-14 at the break.
