Salmen’s Chris Thomas rushed for 330 yards as the Spartans dominated Riverside Academy 51-8 Friday night in Slidell in Bill Stubbs’ return to the sidelines as the first-year coach of the Rebels.
Stubbs’ first game back in coaching since 2001 came against a Slidell team that he led to three state championships.
Thomas’ big day started early with an 80-yard touchdown run to give Salmen a 7-0 lead. Chuck Baker scored on a 1-yard pass from Ray Crochet to give the Spartans (1-0) a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
Thomas added touchdown runs of 73 and 72 yards in the second quarter Crochet connected with Eric Bell on a 7-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-0 at halftime.
The only score of the third quarter came on a 40-yard run by Thomas to make it 41-0.
Devin Montelongo kicked a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter as the Spartans extended their advantage to 44-0.
Riverside (0-1) got its only score of the game on a 22-yard pass from Deuce Wallace to Herb McGee to make the score 44-6.
Henry Glover put an exclamation point on Salmen’s victory when he raced 90 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff following the Rebels’ lone score to make the final 51-6.
