Trey Joseph ran the opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown to set the tone in St. Charles Catholic’s 40-0 domination of winless Haynes Academy in District 10-3A action Friday night at Joe Yenni Stadium in Metairie.
After the Comets built a 19-0 lead in the middle of the first quarter, the remainder of the game was played using running time as St. Charles went on to build a 33-0 halftime lead.
St. Charles, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A, improved to 7-1 overall, including 3-0 in district play. Haynes fell to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in league play.
With De La Salle and St. James left on the schedule, the Comets were able to rest most of their regulars for much of the game after building their big lead against the Yellow Jackets.
Kennan Gauff, a freshman, made the most of his opportunity to play, rushing for 126 yards on 14 carries and scoring three touchdowns.
Defensively for the Comets, Rodney Blanks had five tackles, including a pair of sacks, as St. Charles held Haynes to minus-23 yards of total offense.
A 14-yard run by Phillip Tran on St. Charles’ second possession of the game gave the Comets a 13-0 lead.
St. Charles made it 19-0 at the 6:43 mark of the opening quarter on the first of Gauff’s three touchdowns, which came from 6 yards out.
A 9-yard run by Gauff at the 3:07 mark of the first quarter gave St. Charles a 26-0 lead after one quarter.
The only score of the second quarter came on a 3-yard run by Trey Lowry with 7:22 remaining before halftime to give St. Charles a 33-0 lead at the break.
Gauff broke loose on a 49-yard run on the final play of the contest for the 40-0 final.
