It was all smiles for St. James at the Wildcats’ Picture Day on Monday afternoon.
“It means the time is getting close,” said St. James coach Robert Valdez. “We start school (Tuesday). Every time there is a new season, there is always excitement because it’s new. The kids are excited. We’re excited. We just have to put the pieces together. These days leading up to two dress rehearsals because we will go take Amite in a scrimmage and then we have a jamboree against Vandebilt Catholic.”
“It’s just telling you the season is getting close,” echoed senior St. James quarterback Shamar Smith.
For running back Sean Lebeouf, another senior, there was an additional reason to smile.
“It feels good to me. It’s exciting. It’s my senior year. I recently committed to Navy. I’m looking to give it all for St. James. We will make it to the state championship this year,” said Lebeouf.
Yet another reason to smile were the new yellow jerseys the Wildcats donned for the first time Monday.
“The coaches told us we would have new jerseys and everybody wanted to see the jerseys,” said Shazz Preston, a versatile sophomore. “It’s exciting to see everybody with their jerseys on.
“It’s a little bit big right now but once the pads are on, it will be tight. I like it.”
“Yeah, it feels good when you get new unis,” Lebeouf chimed in. “You feel welcome and we are proud. Our ego is up right now.”
With the summer over, the start of school, and a week away from the official start of fall practice, the Wildcats’ ego is certainly on the positive side.
“Our two goals,” said Preston, “are to win district and then a state championship. That’s what Coach Valdez keeps in our head and we go about that.”
